It was August, 1984. A hot summer
night, and my first night in my new apartment in Charlotte, North
Carolina. The furniture had not yet arrived, but I was just 24, on
my own, and very happy to sleep on some cardboard boxes in my own apartment for the
night ... until I realized I was sharing my new apartment with
several visitors that like to come out in the dark. I could hear
them skittering around the parquet wood floors of the apartment ...
Back then, Toyota made a style of car called a hatchback -- a small, economical car that could carry just about everything you owned at age 24, if you folded both seats down. Well, I decided that my first night in my new apartment would be better spent sleeping in my little hatchback with the seats folded down than in my new apartment with my little roach friends. The next morning I went to the apartment office and asked about the piece of spaghetti that was stuck to the wall, strung over to the stove like a high wire act for my night time friends, and about other little cleaning issues. And, of course about my night time friends. The office manager, Robin, was a
really nice person, and after we worked together to get my apartment
in the right condition, she said, “I think you would be really good
in this business. Would you like to work here?” |
