Moving to Charlotte, Raleigh, or Greensboro, NC, or maybe Columbia, SC? Do you plan on living in an apartment? The great news is that most apartments are very pet friendly with dog parks, pet clean up stations and dog biscuits in the office!
The bad news is that if your dog breed is listed on the "Restricted Breeds" list, than you will not be allowed to rent an apartment at that community. This policy is very consistent among most rental properties.
Private owners are the best source for finding a rental when you own a dog that is typically considered an "aggressive" breed.
Vet records are typically required to prove breed and weight.
Typical Restricted Breeds
The following are usually considered and "aggressive" breed and will not be allowed to live or visit at most apartment communities. Dogs that are mixed with these breeds and have obvious physical characteristics of these breeds are often not allowed either.
Pit Bull Terriers
Sample Pet Policy:
We are a pet friendly apartment community! We are pleased to accept cats and dogs. The following non-traditional pets ARE allowed: Turtles, Non-poisonous frogs, Domestic hamsters, Hermit crabs, Gerbils, Small domesticated birds, and Domestic fish. Fees for these non-traditional acceptable pets may vary if applicable.
Unless used as an assistance animal, restricted dog breeds are NOT allowed. Restricted breeds include the following: Akita, Alaskan Malamute, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, Chow, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Great Dane, Husky, Pit Bull, Rottweiler, and St. Bernard and all "mixes" of the above breeds. Snakes, spiders, ferrets and iguanas are NOT allowed due to liability reasons.
Sample Pet Fees And Deposits
Pet fees and deposits fluctuate. Company policy may change due to many factors such as too many apartments have pets, pet destruction costs, a dog park has been added or competition with neighboring properties has provided the impetus to lowering the pet costs. This can sometimes be a negotiating point when you are renting your apartment.
Plan on a pet fee, pet deposit and pet rent per each pet living in your apartment.
Monthly pet rent - $10 to $30 per pet
Refundable pet deposit - $100 to $500 per pet
Non-refundable pet fee - $100 to $500 per pet
A typical scenario may be:
1st pet - pet deposit $250 (refundable at move out pending walk-through to check for damages) Pet rent - $15 per month.
2nd pet - pet deposit an additional $150 (refundable at move out pending walk-through to check for damages) - $15 per month.
The deposits and fees may vary due to the weight of the pet. A larger pet may have a larger deposit and/or fee.
