Tour Of The Bright And Shiny
Yesterday, our team participated in the highly anticipated 2016 fall Bus Tour, put on by the Greater Charlotte Apartment Association. This year's theme was "New Kids On The Block". It was an excellent day that flowed perfectly! The selected properties were gracious hosts and the after tour venue, OMB (Olde Mecklenburg Brewery) was a great place to eat and network.
With 10,000 apartments under construction and another 13,000 proposed*, the annual Bus Tour gives onsite professionals, owners, developers and builders the opportunity to visit some of the brand new properties recently opened and enjoy a great day of mingling and discovery.
The tour showcases some of the newest and the brightest. The five beautiful properties that we toured were very different in style. From upscale elegance to high energy-with-edge. The properties offered amenity packages that could include: a sauna, steam room and a waterfall-ledge hot tub, a pet spa, a game room of high quality Shuffleboard, Foosball, Billiards and Ping Pong or an indoor basketball court. Most everything that makes life easier, more convenient and enjoyable is right at your fingertips. The interior decor is sleek, modern and very upscale at all five properties; but after that the individual character begins to shine and take shape. Each building's architecture blends well and compliments the vibe of the existing neighborhood.
Seeing the up to date look unveiled at each new property, brings to mind the journey that decorating trends take from one decade to another. Having witnessed many of the changes first hand, I thought it would be a bit of fun to take a look back.
In the 1970s, Burnt Orange or rust, Harvest Gold and Avocado Green were the colors of choice. Appliances, shag carpet, draperies and counter tops were available to mix and match with these color palettes. Dark wood cabinets flanked the kitchen with darkness and the linoleum brought it altogether.
The 1980s gave way to mauve and light blue. Apartments had a theme of rose or blue with matching floors and walls. Wallpaper was a must in the kitchens and bathrooms and mirrors were big. In 1985, I worked at a property that was a bit behind the color trends and it offered studio apartments that were furnished with bright orange and avocado green wood furniture. Pagers were a necessary tool in the 80s and a wallpaper installer vendor that serviced our community, wore his pager on his high top Reeboks.
In the 1990s, sophisticated apartments offered light beige and creme colored carpet, Pickled Oak
cabinets and white appliances. Brightly colored helium balloons were tied with curly ribbons at many entrances to advertise rent specials. Loud pool parties with a DJ and lots of beer were abundant. Delicious Otis Spunkmeyer cookies were being baked fresh everyday to entice renters to complete a rental application.
Presently stainless steel is a must, dog parks are the norm, furry friends are welcomed with puppy biscuits and water bowls, mid-rise buildings are a part of the streetscape and residents enjoy complimentary Starbucks coffee in the well appointed common area gathering spots. These new apartment homes are luxurious and the prices match. Expect studio/one bedroom pricing to begin over the $1100 mark.
It is all beautiful and very very very nice! Just one thing that I miss from back in the day....those cookies! "Where are those Otis Spunkmeyer cookie ovens?" "Come back!" "Come back!"
